51k and not a cm more!
Thought I better tell you all as no one else will speak of the last walk!!!!
Friday
Chris comes up from London and we have a male bonding session at the pub over a few ales. we talk of the task ahead and get a few concerned looks from a glass collector as we talk of ladies cycling shorts and lubrication. We cut the evening short (3 pints on a Friday night truly is dedication!) and myself and Martin head for Morrison's to pick up the next days supplies. Chocolate, flapjack, lucozade and more chocolate.
Early start on Saturday morning and Martins future farther-in-law Martin arrives at 6.00am to drop us off in Horton. Its grand national day and bets are on and I'm feeling luck. Were all decked out in our new gear that we bought from the Outdoor Show and Martin has even bought some new poles!
7.20am and were off up the hill by the side of the pub in Horton. The pace is quick and we meet the dales way sign 45 mins ahead of 24 hour pace. We follow the dales fay farm sign and just 15miles in my feet are in all sorts of trouble. We meet some fellow trailtrekkers who race on ahead of us and make it still on 24hour pace to kettlewell.
1.00pm sat in Kettlewell bus station the boots are off and i am desperately compeeding and sticking down cushioning to the soles of my feet while Chris battles his own demons in the toilets and Dave pretends he's a lady! were realise we still have 9hrs till we get to Skipton!
2.00pm The hill of doom proves it is still an absolute killer and the rain arrives
3.00pm "the call" we call the support crew of Katie and Nat to ask
"when they will arrive at Coniston?"
"were already there"
"where are you parked?"
"by the hotel"
"wrong Coniston" was the reply
"$%£%" was the response
it is at this stage with feet hurting and the prospects of 7 more house we must thank the girls for not letting us quit!
4.00pm
The girls bring an mass of goodies for a picnic and pep talk and after a quick patch up of the feet were off over the moor and on the way to Hetton
6.30pm progress is slow and we are all feeling the pain the moors seem to go on and on and on and the terrain is bad (this is the night part of the leg)
8.30pm and we have covered 51k were walking towards Hetton with 10k and 1 1/2 hours still to go its getting dark and the consensus is were not going on another step. There is a pub up ahead we decide to call it quits and get a much deserved beer.
9.00pm We arrive at the pub, sit outside and whip the boots off. We have just enough money for a round and martin and Chris walk into the pub
"sorry lads private function...hope you have not come too far"
Serves us right. We sit outside and call in for support. the girls are at home waiting for a Chinese (think his name was Gok) so it was left to Martin to pick us up after dropping us off 14hours and 51k earlier
Cheers !
